Westray and Evie schools are the winners of the 2022 Blyth Challenge.

The Challenge, named after Scottish 19th-century wind energy pioneer James Blyth, set a target for schools: to design and build a model wind turbine; or alternatively to produce a research portfolio on wind power.

It was run by Dave Craig from SCDI Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland in collaboration with Orkney Renewable Energy Forum who provided the prizes.

Generous sponsorship by some of the island development trusts and R S Merriman Ltd enabled basic kits including an electric motor to be made available to schools as a starting point for their design.

Teams of 4 entered, and the winning team in the Primary section were Evie Primary School. Senior winners were S2 from Westray Junior High. The Young Engineers and Science Clubs is an initiative of the Scottish Council Development and Industry, and its northern representative Dave Craig has been involved in Science Festival schools and Family Day events for a number of years.

The Orkney businesses and organisations supporting the Challenge included R S Merriman Ltd, the Westray Development Trust, Rousay Egilsay and Wyre Development Trust, Sanday Development Trust, Shapinsay Development Trust and Orkney Micro-Renewables.
