Sea Stories brings together objects which have rarely been on public display before, either from the Museum’s own stores or loaned from elsewhere, to explore Orkney’s deep-rooted maritime connections. From shipwrecks to sea magic, from whale strandings to the Southern Ocean, the thread which ties these objects together is their shared connection to the sea.

The exhibition includes partial remains of the ‘Stronsay Beast’ of 1808, on display for the first time in Orkney, through the kind help of the National Library of Scotland. There is the Birsay Whalebone, the ship’s bell from an Antarctic voyage, and dyewood from the Svecia, wrecked off North Ronaldsay. There are stories of the witch of Brinkie’s Brae who sold winds to sailor, and the other Stromness, 8000 miles away in South Georgia.
