Schools Programme 2023
We have a rich and varied programme for schools – two programmes indeed, one for primary and one for secondary. It’s thanks to the many organisations and individuals who have kindly provided funding for the various activities to come to Orkney and visit schools with no charge.
In addition, schools are able to access Festival talks without charge. We just need to know in advance to make sure that there is space available. Talks cover a wide range of subjects, some in the curriculum and others related to it in one way or another.
There is also material of interest for schools as well as people of varied ages in our online magazine, Frontiers.
Visit to the SUN at St, Magnus Cathedral
Working in collaboration with University of Central Lancashire, the Sun is coming to Orkney – to the heart of the islands in St Magnus Cathedral, during this year’s Science Festival (7-13 Sept) and will be powered by green hydrogen from Orkney’s wind, wave and tidal industry.

STEM Challenges and Competitions
Each day a new challenge with be set for schools to complete with each one linked to a different STEM Ambassador and their career/industry.
CELESTIAL ODYSSEY
And we have a new and unusual competition! It’s to travel on a celestial odyssey, travelling outwards from the Sun to the planets of the Solar System, one by one. You start with the Sun in St Magnus Cathedral, and then look for Mercury, Venus and so on. Each planet is hosted by a well-known local business, with each location having clues to the next one.
