Live Stream Schools Sessions

This year Orkney International Science Festival has a special additional programme for schools, with events for early years, primary and secondary pupils. Teachers and Practitioners can choose from a range of livestream events and pre-recorded sessions, linked to the Curriculum of Excellence, Experiences and Outcomes. We are have also included some professional learning sessions during the festival and competitions for different age groups.

COP26 and Climate CPD – A competition for your School (Primary and Secondary Schools)

This session is for all Primary and Secondary School Teachers who are looking for ways to mark the historic event of Scotland co-hosting the Global Climate Conference COP26 in their school. This is a great opportunity to also get easy-to-use and practical climate resources for your classroom to implement straight away. These resources will get your conversations about current climate changes off to a good start as well as what can be done to create a better future. The COP26 Competition Pack is something you can implement in your school straight away as well and your work could even be exhibited at the COP26 Conference itself. Event delivered by MDEC.

Young STEM Leader Programme Information Session (P4-S6)

Want to know more about the Young STEM Leader Programme (YSLP), an exciting new award which aims to spark greater interest and participation in STEM among young people in Scotland?

The session is an opportunity to hear from the Young STEM Leader team about how the programme works and how to get involved. There will also be a short Q&A at the end. It is open to anyone interested in learning more about the YSLP or looking to deliver it in their centre. Event delivered by SSERC

GSC Learning Lab – Our World Our Impact – Primary (P5 – P7) Practitioners

Learning Lab is a unique online STEM programme for the classroom comprising lesson plans, video content and interactions with experts and teacher professional learning.  Content is delivered by class teachers with support from GSC staff.  This session is the start of a term long online learning programme.

A limited number of places on this 8 – 10 week programme, suitable for P5 – P7, are available to Orkney schools in collaboration with OISF. Places are funded by the Scottish Government.

Our World, Our Impact comprises 4 modules that support learners to explore their connection to the changing planet through the themes of Climate and Weather; Energy; Biodiversity; and Food.

Fun activities to investigate Forces, flexible but aimed at P2 to P5. For Rescue Rapunzel! (individual), make a catapult and lay siege to Rapunzel’s castle. For Build a Boat (individual), find out about Friction Balancing Act from a distance, and for groups, build a tower of paper cups. 1,2, or 3 activities depending on time. About an hour for all three activities. Delivered by Dave Craig of SCDI – YESC.

Mission to Mars (S1-S3)

There’s a robotic Mars rover on a realistic model Martian landscape, and it needs your help and guidance to complete its mission in the harsh and unforgiving environment of the red planet. The rover is complete with viewing cameras, tank tracks and grabbing claw, ready for you to direct online. Join Stuart Rogers from Cerebral Ape to put the rover into action, and to learn about the huge challenge of exploring Mars.

What’s in Space? (P5-P7)

What’s in Space? And what does it do up there? Join Astronomer Dr Anne-Marie Weijmans of the University of St Andrews in this session to look at planets, stars, satellites and all the other things that we can find in space. We’ll start with describing our favourite objects in space, and will then spend some time learning more about them. At the end of the session there will be time to ask all your space-related questions, and I’ll do my best to answer them all!

Navigating by the stars: learning from ancient travellers (S1-S6)

Join Vassilios on a journey around the world and into the past, to learn the secrets of celestial navigation. The ancient Phoenicians, the ancient Greeks, the Vikings and the Polynesians will teach you how to use the stars, sun and moon to navigate. This workshop is for absolute beginners, so no prior knowledge of astronomy is required. If you find the sky fascinating and / or you like a bit of history, then sign up, this is for you! The workshop is supported by an Institute of Physics (Scotland) Public Engagement Grant.

A look at marine plastics with Macduff Marine Aquarium and Emily Penn (P5-7)

Plastics are part of our everyday lives, but when they get into the ocean, they become a persistent problem with far reaching impacts. Will you be part of the solution? Emily Penn is an Ocean advocate who has spent the last decade exploring plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. In the film she tells us of her journey and research into the extent of this global problem – and inspires us to help tackle it. The film will be followed by a live Q&A session with Macduff Marine Aquarium.

Defend The Rhino – Live Lesson (P7-S4)

Join our data science team as we help stop a gang of rhino poachers. You’ll use data science skills to analyse CCTV data from across a South African national park. Then create your own machine learning model that recognises images of poachers, and work together to catch them before it’s too late. This workshop introduces learners to key data science topics and gives learners the chance to experience working as a data scientist. The workshop is suitable for learners from P7-S4. No previous experience of data science is required. Event delivered by Skills Development Scotland and Digital World.
