Jane Goodall lecture Reasons for Hope

One of the world’s most inspiring figures in conservation, she is internationally known for her ongoing study of chimpanzees in Tanzania that spanned more than 50 years. Today she travels the world to raise awareness of global issues, and is a UN Messenger of Peace, as well as the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute.

On her journeys, she meets people and communities facing immense challenges, but also sees the remarkable way in which humans can respond to even the worst situations, hence her message of hope and her setting out of the reasons for it.

Her talk to a packed audience in the Cathedral formed the 2012 Grimond Lecture. The annual Lecture commemorates the immense contribution made locally and nationally by the late Lord and Lady Grimond, by providing an opportunity for the highlighting of issues whose significance is both global and local – the kind of lecture that they would both very much have enjoyed. It was introduced by Science Festival chairman Eoin Scott.

So let’s move forward in this new millennium with hope, for without it all we can do is eat and drink the last of our resources as we watch our planet slowly die. Let’s have faith in ourselves, in our intellect, in our staunch spirit and in our young people. And let’s do the work that needs to be done, with love and compassion.
