From the harsh winds of South Georgia to the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, from the mountains of Bhutan to the coral shores of Vanuatu, the Belgian documentary photographer and explorer Christian Clauwers travels the world, to seek out distant places in changing times and record the natural world and the people who live in it. On view at the Ship of Fools gallery.

A Pier Arts Centre exhibition of art and poetry from the collaboration of photographer Rebecca Marr and poet Valerie Gillies. It includes rush woven textiles by artist Joanne B Kaar, a specially commissioned work by sculptor Frances Pelly responding to the tradition of St Brigid’s Crosses, and a film documenting the almost lost tradition of the grass Craa’s Foot.

The story of the Orkney artist whose work appeared in comic books and cartoon series worldwide – Dr Who and Star Trek, Thunderbirds and Charlie’s Angels. In London he produced publicity material for Spike Milligan and played guitar in a group that supported The Kinks, and then moved back to Orkney to set up his studio in Stenness. On view at Orkney Museum.

“He saved from extinction, single-handed, a whole corpus of myth, legend, and historical tradition which the educated Orcadians of his time ignored, even deplored,” wrote Ernest Marwick. The bicentenary of Walter Traill Dennison’s birth is highlighted at the Orkney Museum in a display of generously donated family items, some from Armada and Jacobite times.

Stromness Museum’s summer exhibition highlights the leading role of the town, home to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), with its wave test site a little further along the coast at Billia Croo, and home too to Heriot-Watt University’s Orkney campus, which from which many enterprising people, projects and companies have developed.

Orkney food and the stories behind it is the theme for this year’s Orkney Camera Club exhibition in the Orkney Library. There are photos from land and sea, farm fields and fishing boats, and from kitchen and table as well.
