BUSS O GRESS / TUFT O GRASS

An exhibition of art and poetry developed through the collaboration of photographer Rebecca Marr and poet Valerie Gillies.

The exhibition includes rush woven textiles by artist Joanne B Kaar, a specially commissioned work by sculptor Frances Pelly responding to the tradition of St Brigid’s Crosses, and a film documenting the almost lost tradition of the grass Craa’s Foot.

It also includes artefacts from Orkney Museum and Stromness Museum.

“Grass has regenerative powers because it grows from the root not the tip. Grasses are a powerful symbol, withstanding constant grazing and trampling. We found that the grasses restored us. Our attention to nature brought its own reward.”

On the evening of Friday 5 September at 6.30 pm Valerie Gillies and Rebecca Marr will weave a story of grass through poems and images and natural history readings.
