WORKSHOP: LIVING ON THE ANCIENT HILLTOPS

September 8 → 3:30 pm4:30 pm

St Magnus Centre, Palace Road, Kirkwall

Settlement in Slovenia from early times has been in lowland areas – but a big shift seems to have happened in the period of the 4th-6th centuries AD. Archaeological evidence shows a move to higher ground, with most people living on naturally defended and artificially fortified hilltop sites. What was the reason for such a dramatic change?

Archaeologist Dr Tina Milavec of the University of Ljubljana shows images from various sites and explores possible explanations. She goes on to ask about the Orkney situation, and for any similarities or contrasts.

Numbers limited to 30, booking essential.
