Richard Shucksmith in Shetland has spent the last three years working on the BBC’s Wild Isles series, broadcast this spring. He shares images and stories, and guidance as well, and speaks about the physical and technical challenges involved, from his lifelong love of photography.

“One of my favourite places is the coast as it has a wide variety of habitats, species and dramatic seascapes. For me the sea encompasses the power, turmoil and beauty of the world in which we live. Studying marine biology and marine ecology has allowed me to develop an understanding of this dynamic environment, whilst my passion for SCUBA diving and photography has allowed me to explore and record the life that lives there.”

Richard’s work has been widely published in magazines, journals, books, newspapers, advertising agencies around the world. Many of his images have won awards in the Scottish Nature Photography Awards, Ocean Arts Photo Competition and Underwater Photographer of the Year. He has had many highly commended images feature in the British Wildlife Photography Awards since the competition was founded and in 2011 was overall winner.
