Victor Kossakovsky’s earlier films included Gunda on animal consciousness and Aquarela on the natural wonder of water. In Architecton he looks at buildings in a world of rock and concrete, with the passage of time leading great buildings into sometimes long slow ruin and at other times sudden destruction. Amidst the flow of images, he asks: “How do we build, and can we build better before it’s too late?”

Prof. Mark Edmonds introduces the screening with a short talk on Cultural Geologies, exploring aspects of the relationship between people and stone in Neolithic Orkney.
