Blocks of seabed leased for offshore wind represent a massive proportion of the UK’s future electricity demand, with some 19 GW (around one-fifth of current demand) within 100 kilometres of Orkney harbours. Could Orkney become a service base for the new offshore wind developments, to the east and the west and down into the Moray Firth? Yes it could, say Neil Kermode of EMEC and Gareth Davies of Aquatera, and with potential economic and job opportunities on the scale of the Royal Naval era of Scapa Flow or the early days of North Sea oil.
