THE GREAT BARRIERS BUS TOUR

September 7, 2025 → 1:30 pm ─ 5:00 pm
From the former bus station, Great Western Road, Kirkwall

An opportunity to mark a historic event – the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Churchill Barriers by a visit to them in good company.

Building them was an immense achievement, and since 12 May 1945 they have provided a road link for the islands of Burray and South Ronaldsay across Lamb Holm and Glims Holm. Join civil engineer Neil Kermode, Steve Sankey and Capt. Bill Spence for a bus tour across the Barriers to hear about their construction and their impact, stopping at each one to get a fuller picture of the scale of the work. The route includes a visit the Old Kirk in Holm to see the exhibition of photos of the building of the Barriers. On the way back there are refreshments at the Barrier View Café, built on the site of the Rockworks, one of the former construction camps. Further elements may be included, with the aim of adding to the interest and enjoyment of the afternoon.

Organised by Another Orkney Production, providers of the annual events Celebrating Scapa Flow, Orkney Aviation Festival, and Billy’s Night Oot.

Numbers limited: booking essential, tickets £15 (including refreshments)
