SYMPHONIES OF GALAXIES

September 9 → 8:00 pm9:30 pm

The Orkney Club, Harbour Street, Kirkwall

Astronomy is one of the rich mix of influences on the Scottish composer Eddie McGuire, the spectrum of whose works ranges from Celtic Knotwork and Clyde Built to Chinese Knotwork and Winds at Sea. He has also played for more than 40 years in one of Scotland’s most distinctive traditional music groups, the Whistlebinkies.

How does he bring together images of East and West, the sounds of the shipyards and the wind in the heather, and the fires of the Big Bang with the vast stillness of interstellar space? Astronomer Dr Anne-Marie Weijmans from St Andrews University, who introduced Thursday evening’s sequence of five astronomical pieces, joins him in conversation, along with trumpeter and conductor Bede Williams from St Andrews who directed the music. A group of Orkney traditional musicians help to celebrate the occasion.

Tickets £6 & £4 can be booked through this LINK.
