SEA WIND FOR THE FUTURE

North Sea oil transformed the Orkney economy, creating hundreds of skilled jobs and laying the foundations from which the renewables sector has developed. Now a new area of opportunity is on the horizon – offshore wind farms to feed electricity directly into the national grid, and serviced from local harbours. Thistle Wind Partners are working on plans for a floating wind farm 21 km east of Deerness, with construction starting around 2029, and one of their project directors, Ian Taylor, describes progress and the shape of the future.

You can read more about the design work in an article in Frontiers magazine.
