Naval architect Dennis Davidson and former boatbuilder Len Wilson mark the 200th anniversary of the RNLI with a look at lifeboat design over two centuries and some stories of the boats in action. They go back to the earliest designs, and then the story of the rescue of the Forfarshire at the Farne Islands in 1838 by Grace Darling and her crew, using an open coble. In Stromness six-oared pilot boats were used before the RNLI established a station, with the Saltaire arriving in 1867. Stromness was the first station to receive the later Barnett 51 motor lifeboat, the JJKSW shown in the photo here.
