GENETIC HEROES

September 7 → 5:30 pm6:30 pm

Orkney Theatre, KGS, Kirkwall

Some people live and thrive despite harbouring what for others are lethal mutations. Their protection comes from further genetic mutations. Thus a few with very high levels of the virus HIV don’t go on to get AIDS; and similarly, a small number with very high lipid levels stay free of heart attacks. Early in his career, at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Boston and at MIT, Dr Stephen Friend led the team that cloned the first human cancer susceptibility gene. Now a visiting professor at Oxford University, he describes the search for ‘genetic heroes’ whose special genetic abilities may give clues towards new ways to tackle diseases.
