Arena, Pickaquoy Centre, Kirkwall
We’ve got a day packed full of activity for the whole family to enjoy!
You can hear the sounds of whales and dolphins and wonder if the day will come when we can communicate with them. You can learn about life in the sea and efforts to rescue stranded cetaceans. You can learn about bats, including Orkney’s Common Pipistrelle, and about where you can find various birds in Orkney, and also about the long-lived fulmars on Eynhallow. You can build a Lego microorganism to place on the biofilm wall.
The superheroes will be there, and they’re bringing VR headsets for you to fly through space with them, up to the International Space Station and on to the depths of space, to planets, stars and even a black hole.
And to find your way round in space you can create constellations, and you can ask an astronomer about the mysteries of the universe. You can take part in a Maths Blast and enter the strange and beautiful world of fractals. And you can help to build a massive tetrahedron.
Sit your driver exam with a remote-control toy bus, and find out how AI technologies are being used in transport planning. Learn about coding for computers. Experiment with model wind turbines, and try building them as well. See how scanning systems map our landscapes – with groundbreaking scans of Aberdeen, the city and county, and Moray, and find out about plans to take the system to Orkney next. Find out about chemistry and marine biology in the energy industry. Try out electronic circuit boards to make a working electronic system.
There is much more, and you can choose your visiting time. Morning tickets cover the session from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm; afternoon tickets are for 1.00 pm to 3.30 pm.
Ticket prices are £7 & 5.
And don’t forget that, either before or after your visit, there’s also the building work on Number City just over on the all-weather pitch.
