The Lindsay System began with a question: could the familiar range of the Scottish smallpipe chanter be extended without adding keys or losing the character of the traditional instrument?

In the first half of this event, Donald WG Lindsay traces the development of the system through twenty years of experiment, invention and musical practice. He uses images, instruments and early prototypes to describe the problem and to illuminate the process – and then to explore the solution.

The second half is a concert set played on the resulting extended-range smallpipes, revealing the musical possibilities that emerged from the design.

Donald WG Lindsay is a Scottish singer, piper, songwriter and instrument designer who lives in South Ronaldsay. His work brings traditional music into conversation with original song, instrument-making and open-source design. His 2025 solo debut album, Two Boats Under the Moon, received five stars in BBC Music Magazine.
