The One O’Clock Toast today is to Dr Jean McPhail, later Cursiter, who was doctor in Papa Westray for nearly 25 years. It is given by Andrea Massey of the Orkney Women Doctors Research Group.

Dr Jean McPhail started work in Papay 100 years ago, and subsequently married a local man, Ian Cursiter. She was the first doctor to set up in the newly built accommodation of Morven house, complete with surgery. In Papay, she met a local man, Ian Cursiter of the neighbouring farm of Gairbolls, and they married in 1929. Two years later she was involved in a dramatic sea journey to take an injured patient to the Balfour Hospital, with an island crew rowing out in a small boat in a stormy sea to intercept the Earl Sigurd on her way back from Westray to Kirkwall.
