ANEW THE VINES HAVE FRUITED
Alpine flower meadows, limestone caves, hilltop churches and riverside towns … these are all part of the land of Slovenia. To mark the 30th anniversary of the friendship between the Festival and the Slovenian Science Foundation, Damir Kapitanovic from the Klet Brda vineyards is making a first visit to Orkney with some of their wines for us to taste.
Klet Brda is a cooperative, bringing together wines produced by 400 families in Goriška Brda, a region on the west of the country, halfway between the Alps and the Adriatic. Warmth from the Adriatic meets cooler Alpine air to create a longer growing season, and the soil is a layered mix of marl and sandstone. The vineyards are terraced on steep hillsides, scattered in a countryside of olive trees and forests.
We will be joined online by Andraž Ivšek and Peter Volasko in Slovenia, who will reflect on the long tradition of Slovenian winemaking, going back to Roman times and before, with each proposing a toast during the evening.

The 25th anniversary of the link was marked by a tune specially commissioned from the Orkney composer and musician Jennifer Wrigley, for the director of the Slovenian Science Foundation whose vision and energy brought about the connection with Orkney. An Orkney Tribute to Dr Edvard Kobal subsequently won a Scottish national award.
