Orkney Theatre, KGS, Kirkwall

100 years ago the town of Kirkwall got its first mains electricity when the Town Council bought in a World War I generating station from the former seaplane base at Houton. After World War II the newly-formed North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board built a new power station for the town, with the planners making sure that it was of Walliwall stone. Bill Stevenson of Orkney Vintage Club tells the story of the power stations and the machinery within them, and Prof. Tom Stevenson of the Museum of Communication in Burntisland looks at the advances that made them possible.
