A VISIT TO THE MILL
It’s the only mill in the world that grinds bere, and it’s open today to look around and enjoy a range of additional activities. You can try grinding bere yourself, with a replica hand quernstone on loan from Orkney Museum. You can have a closer look at the grain under a microscope. You can explore the mill on your own, with a leaflet to guide you and staff on hand to answer questions. Tom Muir will be there between 2 and 3 pm with some stories. Diane Clouston will demonstrate how to make a bere bannock, and Beiting & Brew will be there with their food trailer and a special bere-themed menu.
You can find out more about the story of the mill on their website, and also how to get there. You can also go in advance on a video tour, filmed and edited by Jack Norquoy.
The Barony Mill is managed and operated by Birsay Heritage Trust.
