A QUANTUM OF POETRY

“In my opinion, much of the confusion around quantum physics is that we naturally try to picture the unknowable and see the unthinkable,” says physicist Prof. James Millen of King’s College London. “But language transcends visual limitations, and can appeal directly to the imagination.”

And so to give a clearer picture of the quantum world he sought the assistance of a poet – Dublin-based writer and performer Chandrika Narayanan-Mohan, a Goethe-Institute Artist-in-Residence. “Art and science are just different languages trying to understand the what, the why, and the how in everything around us,” she says. Together they go on a journey of exploration into the quantum world.

I am pressing myself into quantum

shoving my skin up against it
trying to imprint the whorls and flakes of myself
onto something ambivalent

… I have churned my emotions through the language of quantum
felt versions of myself vibrate against each other
felt the crescendo of amplitudes, the dull crash of interference
ached for things to snap into place
