On August 30 1916 Sir Ernest Shackleton’s men were rescued from Elephant Island – their refuge after their ship Endurance was crushed by pack ice. Shackleton had gone by small boat to South Georgia for help, through icy storms and mountainous seas. Dr Maria Pia Casarini of the Silvio Zavatti Polar Research Institute tells the story.
